A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out. Proverbs 25:28 (MSG)

We are defenseless without self-control.

Doors and windows are entry ways, usually they are sealed tight with heavy metal, thick glass and locks. As a place needs to be protected, self discipline protects us from unwanted robbery, destruction, or even worst death. In bible times, and quite possibly today- we know of cities surrounded by walls, these walls separate them from neighboring nations. The walls offer protection from invasion, and from attack.

Today we know that China has a wall and Israel as well, but we rarely hear of countries building walls around their cities. I chose The Message version to explain the significance of a wall, as it is stated in the King James Version.

Like a city that is broken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit. Proverbs 25:28 (KJV)

I am a very graphic and animated person, so when the bible gives me something to imagine- I allow my mind to be free. And I want you to do the same, what does it look like to have windows shattered and doors knocked down? Looks chaotic, messy, violated, victimized.

Then imagine that you live in walled city; you know that no army can come into your city and kill your family because you are protected by the walls. Nobody can enter your city, without having to climb over the walls, and when they climb there is a watchman on the defense, ready to stop him and knock him down.

But what if you live by the wall and you see a big hole, where a man pr even a car can come in through. What if you are sleeping at night and someone creeps in and steals your stuff and kills your loved ones.

That is how defenseless we are without the discipline of self – control.  I have personally noticed that we need to proactively work on ourselves to achieve self control. It is not some gift God gives us, it is not a spiritual impartation- it is our active duty as Christians, as human beings in general.

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus! I love you God, and I love my self and my people. And Lord We need you, we need your grace to live according to the scriptures. I plead for us Lord for strength to use our choices in life and not carry on in life as if we are helpless and defenseless, life is happening and we are to make it happen under your wisdom and sovereign guidance. I plead the blood of Jesus over us, battling demons who want us and expect for us to surrender so that they may take full control- help us to build our walls God- and train us to better ourselves daily. I pray for those who have not been changed and who do not know the power you have invested in is, and waken them up from their sleep, i pray we may humble ourselves before daily and allow you to teach us to live disciplined lives. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
