Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit: Ephesians 5:18

Why are liquor stores referred to as “wine and spirits”? Is there a secret the world knows that us Christians so blatantly avoid?

Life is not a happy joyful ride for any of us, life is really what you make it. The things which we live through often place us in trauma, in depression or in apathy. It is not a surprise to ride the public transit and not see how exhausted people are, not only physically but emotionally and mentally drained.

If we take a second to look into people’s eyes, we see the pain and despair calling out for help. We see people beaten by life, and it shouldn’t be a surprise either, to associate illness with mental stress and fatigue. I have learned that: every emotion seems to bring with it another emotion; they are all interrelated. For example, disappointment brings despair, which brings hopelessness, bringing desperation which inevitably births depression.

As Christians these emotions are shunned on. We are told to change our minds, as if it happens with the blink of an eye! Or we are told that we don’t know God or reprimanded for ‘not believing God’. We are rebuked for expressing thoughts of despair, or apathy: we are looked down upon for fear or for being hesitant.

Whenever we find ourselves in this state, we desperately seek help from God because we know that He is all knowing and all powerful. When God takes His time to complete the work, which he often does, it is easy to seek help elsewhere.

The Bible is as I have said in the past, really straightforward and insulting, but necessary because of its confronting aspects. How do we cope with these overwhelming and incessant emotions? Many people close their eyes and sleep easily. Some others like to listen to music and others dance to the music. Quite a few like to drink, smoke hookah, pop pills, smoke weed or do other drugs. These are simply coping mechanisms. We would do anything to feel better, but we usually become addicted to what makes us feel better.

What I have often wondered is: why do liquor stores present wine and liquors as wine and spirits?

Spirits:

  • an alcoholic beverage that is distilled rather than fermented. … alcohol, alcoholic beverage, alcoholic drink, inebriant, intoxicant

When battling with overwhelming things in life, let’s try to stay in the spirit and not into other spirits.

Brawler:

  • a fighter: battler, belligerent, combatant, fighter, scrapper. someone who fights.

I perceive that God, was letting us in on a secret.

When under the influence of anything, we become intoxicated by it. For example when we are under the influence of God, we are intoxicated (filled) and led by God’s holy spirit. When we are intoxicated by sex, we are led by lustful, sensual and sexual spirits. The idea that the scripture implies, is that when we are filled with drinks we are led by them, and when we are filled with God’s spirit we are led by Him.

Let’s pray:

Father God, I thank you for word and for your grace. I thank you for free will, and experience in you. For how you have raised me up, and for forgiving me the many times I fail you. I stand in the gap for those who are in the world and in the church who have no idea how to overcome the deep holes of depression: I pray you would show us the light at the end of the tunnel, and teach us to navigate through life despite the pain. In Jesus name, Amen.
