Devotional 1/19

For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is His name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth. Isaiah 54:5

Our relationship with God will mirror all the relationships in our lives.

I have gone through a process of submission, obedience and faithfulness in my own relationship with God. A few years ago God told me I AM YOUR HUSBAND. In this same way God called Israel to be His wife, but Israel cheats on God just like we cheat on God.

In the Bible, the book of Hosea. We meet a man who marries a woman, who runs away to cheat on him with other men. And this book is basically about God loving us, even while we run away and cheat on him.

How on earth do we cheat on God? God is a jealous God!!

We cheat on God when we lend our hearts to anything outside of God. God calls us to serve, but we lend our hearts to being served. God calls us to love others, and we lend our hearts to loving ourselves and finding others to love us. God calls us to worship Him alone, but we lend our bodies to practice worldly things like singing and dancing to worldly music. God should be our only comfort, but we find comfort in TV shows, in music, drugs, wine (beer or liquor) and in our relationships.

We cheat on God! Nobody is exempt to this because we even cheat on God with our minds. We lend our minds to worry, to depression, to anger, frustration and sexual imaginations. Of course we fall short of the glory of God! We live in a fallen, broken world.

And the air is filled with negativity, and on the inside we need transformation.

In the book of Hosea, God directs Hosea to marry Gomer, and from research it seems that she was heavily influenced by her society.  In the beginning Hosea and Gomer shared a wonderful marriage, but after a while (like many of us!) Gomer becomes restless and loses her joy. We have felt like Gomer, at least I can say I have: it feels like you are in a jail, like a bird trapped in a cage. Where your freedoms are restricted and you have to constantly watch yourself, so that no one is indirectly affected by you and your decisions.

Maybe Hosea was all consumed in spiritual things and Gomer didn’t feel loved anymore. Maybe she got bored, maybe she was tired of the routine. Gomer actually gets pregnant three times, one child is Hosea’s and the other two are not. The two other children come from adultery, hence her cheating on Hosea. And her sin going public!

Sometimes we think that what we do in the dark is not reaping a fruit, aka bringing about consequences.

Even though God allowed this, he also knew that He would always love us unfaithful ones. Because love is not based on wrongs, God’s love is unconditional. God tells Hosea, to go get Gomer from the harlotry. And this displays God’s merciful and faithful nature, yes like Hosea God suffers our rebellions- but He is also willing to take us back.

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus, I have been saddened in writing this blog but I understand that your love for us surpasses understanding. Your plans for us are good, and we need to change our ways by making a decision to do so. I pray for your mercy, and overpower us with your love from the inside out. Make me a servant God. May we become your beloved once again, may we believe that our maker is my husband. In Jesus name, Amen.
