And said, ‘On account of this a man will leave the father and mother and be joined with his wife, and the two will become into one flesh’? Matthew 19:5
The greatest marriages are built on teamwork. A mutual respect, a healthy dose of admiration and a never ending portion of love and grace.
There’s a mystery in why God ordained marriage, it’s two becoming one. How nice does it sound, how hard can it be. It’s as we are with God, we become one spirit with God, and how nice does that sound, yet what a challenge it can be.
God is faithful to us, and desires for us to be faithful to Him: in this sense we belong to Him. If we abide in Him we will bear fruit, if we separate we will surely dry up. God designed marriage to glorify His own self, through our love and commitment.
The goal in marriage is not to think alike, but to think together.
Robert C. Dodds
The truth is, that we are all too different to think alike. A lot comes into play; upbringings, genetics, family traditions, mannerisms, religious influence and taste. Even identical twins are different! Surprisingly enough God created sex for togetherness, for this oneness. The bible says, “leaving mother and father and cleaving to each other.”
- stick, adhere, cohere, cling, cleave mean to become closely attached
- In Hebrew: Dabaq: to cling, cleave, keep close
kolláō (Hebrew: kólla, “glue”) – to bond (cleave), adhere to (literally, “glued together”); to cleave, join to; (figuratively) intimately connected in a soul-knit friendship.
kolláō is used “frequently in ancient medical language of the uniting of wounds”
Many people think love is found, or that love is a felling. And if we go by that we will never know what God intended for our lives. Sometimes God does bring your husband, and other times He allows you to choose your partner- but it is up to you to maintain it. Like a job, you can get it but will you keep it? Everything is hard work, and we all just love hard work.
Dear God, I pray that You would help me to stand in the mystery of this oneness that You want from us, with you first and then our husbands/wives. I pray we can trust you as we obey your word in each relationship we encounter, may we be faithful to those you have placed in our lives despite of life’s roller coaster type rides. I pray for an increased desire and willingness to commitment, and to become one with those whom you called us to. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
