In your patience possess ye your souls. Luke 21:19

There is nothing, naturally speaking, that makes us lose heart quicker than decay—the decay of bodily beauty, of natural life, of friendship, of associations, all these things make a man lose heart; but Paul says when we are trusting in Jesus Christ these things do not find us discouraged, light comes through them.
The Place of Help

This is one of my favorite scriptures, because I’m a grace preacher with a heavy focus on the soul. I think I have even written about this scripture in the past, but since the word of God is alive, He gives new and fresh revelation for us to grow. On this day, God ministered to me about holding on to your soul’s salvation in Christ. Do you possess your soul?
God is a God of order and not of confusion, therefore He makes the scriptures plain for our understanding. There is truly is no hidden interpretation of the scriptures, since we have been given understanding- the privilege of understanding- so we may be aware and obedient.
So I ask again, do YOU possess your soul? If we possess our soul, we are in control of it- when someone else or something else is in possession of our soul, they are in control of our soul. In the context of the scripture, Jesus is speaking about the last days and the uproar that will occur as God’s wrath comes into play. Jesus tells us, in your patience you will possess your soul.
Let’s study:
  • Verse 9, Jesus says: “be not terrified”
  • Verses 14-15, He says: Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom”
  • Verse 26, He says: “Men’s hearts failing them for fear”
  • Verse 28, like a cake with whip cream and a strawberry on top He says: And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws near.”

 Jesus died for you,
He is saving your soul.

I always ask God to show me people’s hearts, because why would I bother with appearances: they lie. I can act rich, act nice, act Christian but my heart, the heart that God knows tells a different story. Something I admire about myself, something God taught me about myself, is that I am tenacious. People tell me that I am strong willed, and that when my mind is made up I do not budge and this is true- it can be both good and an evil. I know God said this because I tend to resist change, and I am very apprehensive about moving forward if my mind is not made up. I’m a thinker, so I know that to every characteristic we are endowed with, there is a negative and a positive, and as a positive, as a Christian, God has made me tenacious in the spirit.
Tenacious:
  • tending to keep a firm hold of something; clinging or adhering closely, firm, tight, fast, clinging; persisting in existence; not easily dispelled.
  • not readily relinquishing a position, principle, or course of action; determined, persevering, persistent, determined, strong-willed, resolute, patient, steadfast

To be tenacious is more than endurance, persistence or hanging on. Tenacity is effort into making you what you  remain in what you believe, even fighting to protect those beliefs. Suppose you live your entire life as a Christian, but you lived everyday with anxiety attacks, with bitterness, or other sins like stealing, lying or fornicating- do you think you will win in the end? No I don’t think you will receive eternal life, God says faith pleases Him. If you repent last minute, I’m sure you will but if you die in a panic attack I highly doubt so. It’s similar to suicide, they end up in hell because they lacked faith in Jesus Christ.

If we worry, we demonstrate that we are not in faith. If we steal we demonstrate we are not in faith. If we smoke for comfort we demonstrate we are in faith. If we fornicate, for pleasure, comfort or love, we are not in faith. Why do I say that? if we worry, we do not trust that God has our best in mind. If we steal, we show God we do not trust He provides. If we commit suicide, we show God he is not able to chance our lives of suffering or problems. So please work on your issues, we are called to walk by faith and not by sight.

Lets pray:

Father God, although your mercy is new every morning, we continue to fail you and doubt the veracity of your word. Please look at those things some may cling to like secret comforts and escapes, to deal with life’s challenging times. Whether it’s substance abuse, fornication, gossip, enjoying worldly things or any other sin which separates us from you, I first ask for forgiveness. I ask for each person to receive repentance in their hearts and minds, and for liberation from ourselves. I pray for your spirit to renew our hearts and minds. I pray for those in leadership who are going through apathy, resentment or superiority and Lord I ask that you give us all a tenacious spirit to fight against all things that raise themselves above knowing the true and living God.  In Jesus name, Amen.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and steadfast. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain;
Hebrews 6:19
