Devotional 9/1

Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe[confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me. John 14:1

Uncertainty is the fuel for doubt, cynicism and worry.

I’ve heard people say “life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you are going to get.” This is the truth, isn’t it? Even as sons and daughters of God, we still see the good, the bad, the upside, the downsides, the happy and the sad, we see the unjust and we also see restitution. We go through all types of situations but we should not go through all types of emotions. Something I have been learning throughout the years, emotions are unreliable so we must respond with precision and caution. If we do not have self control over our emotions, we find that we become exhausted and undependable, and we will certainly open doors for the enemy to take place in our lives. God is not unreliable, our emotions are unreliable. In one of my favorite books, the gospel of John, Jesus told the disciples “You believe in God, you do well. Believe also in me.”

They were discouraged because Jesus prophesied that his own disciples would deny Him (Peter) and another would betray him (Judas), imagine the struggle in their hearts. On top of these disheartening new, Jesus tells them that would be killed (crucified). The disciples were certainly concerned, worried and sad. But Jesus assured them to encourage themselves in the faith. Today God tells us “take heart, be courageous, this is God’s plan. It will work out for good.”

We have God of heaven, the Sovereign Lord of lords and King of kings orchestrating everything going on in our lives, even when it does not make sense to our finite minds; and we have the Father manifested in the Love of God in the body of Christ. We should exercise our faith in knowing the different attributes of God the father and God the Son. They are One God; and God is sovereign and omnipresent.

  • Sovereignty: ruler-ship of all creation
  • Omniscience: all-knowing. God knows everything, and His knowledge is infinite.

He knows temptations, emotions and weaknesses. He was 100 percent God, but also 100 percent sin. Jesus learned the separation from God, in the moments of Crucifixion… remember He cried “Father, Father, Why have you forsaken me?!”. We can be comforted in knowing that the Lord Jesus went to school, He had earthly fathers, brothers and friends, He had people who broke His heart too, He had a career and a job (I supposed Joseph taught Him carpentry as a young boy), and so much more if you stop to meditate on Jesus as a man. We can see that humans can live in total surrender to God, and walk like Jesus walked. It’s possible.

He went on in the 16th chapter, to say: In me you have peace, and in the world you will have troubles, distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.] John 16:33

When we have uncertainty, we are saying that we do not fully trust God. We are basically saying, “yes, God is good, but I don’t know if He will be good to me” or things like “Yes, sure, God is watching over us but He has too many problems to worry about mine.” I may sound silly, but these are cynical statements, made by dubious and unbelieving people. I’ve learned that I have an attitude towards God at times. And this is why I made it a discipline to feed myself on the word of God, in each area which may be a weakness in my life. The truth is that I need to trust in God in areas where I have been disappointed. Even when you are battling in your heart and mind, remember God knows the depths of our hearts. And the depths of our hearts, down to the intentions are as clear as day to Him. We are naked before God, and He knows whether your faith is genuine.

Thoughts:

  • By faith we continue to seek God: keep searching the scriptures, fasting and allow God to prune you into His image
  • By faith we keep serving God: be faithful to your calling and servitude in church
  • By faith we love on others: encourage, pray for and hang out with others

Declaration: God’s perfect love towards me, is changing me and He will continue to change me until the day of Jesus return! God has not given me a spirit of fear; I have a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. I will look out for others well being around me, because that’s what Jesus has done for me. I am tenacious, and hardheaded when it comes to God; I will not give up, despite of what comes at me! Even if I do not know what is going to happen in the future, I know that God knows the future, He created it! And I believe that He wants the best for me, even as He stretches my faith and changes my character and it hurts me.

Let’s pray:

Thank you lord, that we can always come to You with my weaknesses, shame or erratic thoughts. I pray for each person reading this, that we may walk along life confidently believing and acting like we believe that YOU ARE FOR US! I pray for increase of conviction in the knowledge of God that we have. And I pray against all anxiety, and all worry caused by feeling out of control or helpless in any situations which life presents to us. I pray for peace, hope and love in our souls. In Jesus name, Amen.
