Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls. For My yoke is easy[to bear] and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
No burden is too heavy when it’s given in love and carried in love. When we yoke our lives with Jesus, He also carries our burdens with us and gives us his strength to follow in his way of love.
God counts us not being still, and grateful as being rebellious. He rebuked Martha for being a servant, and not being still receiving from Him. He rebuked Peter for being flighty, and impulsive. And he had to change Paul because He was zealous for the wrong thing. Many times, as human beings we think that doing a lot is being productive. Other times we think that having friends, or partners gives us value or sense of significance. And usually, what is very popular is that nobody rests their minds, thinking that to physically sleep is enough.
God has a different system than that of the world, the religious world believed in working to be found righteous before God’s requirements. But when Jesus came, He says I want you to carry your cross too, which comes with work but I want you to relax. I have observed many, who are willing to work, for God’s presence and purpose, which is great by all means. But when we are always on the go, we miss God’s work in the process. We even become an obstruction to God’s plans, when He just wants us to rest. Believe, wait and rest. I am often amused, when I am simply thinking about God, and He responds to my thoughts. Or when I have a food craving, and He supplies my needs without me ever mentioning it. God is not interested in a life of sacrifice, because He does not look at our works: good or bad. He is after our hearts, especially a humbled heart. When I mess up, or am worried about bad things I have done, God reminds me of His grace: He tells me, “It’s not about what you do”.
We know God is a holy God, but God also knows we are very much human. We are His children, and we will not necessarily be 100 percent before His glory. We need to constantly ask God to teach us to rest, to wait hopefully and to trust blindly. The main battle of the believers, very early on in the bible in Exodus- is our inability to rest in God. In Hebrews 4, the bible says that the people did not make it into the promised land because their hearts were unbelieving. When we do not believe God, we act like it. And when we believe we act like it too. I have read a funny quote along the years which says, “you cant become a Christian by going to church, just like you can’t become a car by going into a garage.”. If you believe the promises God made you, then you prepare for it according to His leading. Many people say they believe God, but make hasty decisions demonstrating that they do not. Another thing, the Lord has taught me is that He is a jealous God. God will keep us away from job opportunities, relationships or material blessings because He know we will either make those things our gods or we will become arrogant, and take His glory. God calls us to serve without expecting anything in return, because our servitude bring people to acknowledge God. When our intentions are dubious, God knows it and He puts us to the fire!
It’s amazing the amount of people who do not know themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, or tendencies. They only define themselves by what they do. Are you a mother, a teacher, a friend? No, you are God’s purpose on this earth. God will continue to mold our identities, by testing our hearts. And He also needs to know your intentions, whether you will serve Him through it and despite it all. The Lord wants to show YOU to YOU.
Who are you outside of the roles you play in life?
Lord God, I thank you for creating my personality. I thank you for the refining and retouching you have done throughout the years, and I recognize I am still in the process. I acknowledge that your word says you will continue the work in me, until the day of Jesus Christ, meaning you are not done with any of us yet. I pray for us as Christians to stay humble and obedient, to walk in justice and mercy every single day. I also pray for those who are uncomfortable, sad and even confused because they were not expecting to be put to the fire, yet again. I thank you that even in the fire, you are with us. help us receive what you are teaching us in this system. In Jesus name, Amen.
