Devotional 10/30

The eye is the lamp of the body; so if your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive], your whole body will be full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. But if your eye is bad[spiritually blind], your whole body will be full of darkness [devoid of God’s precepts]. So if the [very] light inside you [your inner self, your heart, your conscience] is darkness, how great and terrible is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23

Delivered from eternal death to life. We talk about salvation and being ‘saved’, but rarely is the question asked “saved from what”?

Most of us would say we need to change, or we need some help. God is the helper. Many people have seen their life in the same condition for a long time, and have resolved to accept it as is. Change is hard to accept, and sometimes even harder to bring about; and often this is why God has to do it for us (sometimes drastically, right?).  The seasons change, so that we would be able to appreciate each change. Without the fall and winter, we would not be able to appreciate the blooming of life in the spring. Without the tides of pain, we wouldn’t even recognize joy and happiness. Without deceit and hypocrisy, we wouldn’t be able to be grateful for loyalty and sincerity. If you’ve never been sick, you would never know what it’s like to desire being healthy. And without change, the caterpillar would never become the beautiful butterfly. Change is necessary, without it we would be in an extremely boring world. And as much as we would like to deny it: you, and me, need change in our lives.Image result for keep our eyes focused on the author

When we are focused on God, He fills us with light. Even if we are going through hell, there’s a deep conviction reminding us that anything can change at any moment. But if we keep our eyes fixed on darkness, we will be consumed by it- WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IT! Where are your eyes fixed?

  • Are you looking at yourself? Your insecurities, your desires, your discontent?
  • Are you looking at the enemy’s attacks? Fear, paranoia, anxiety, discomfort or pain?
  • Are you looking at the world? The indifference, the hostility, the trends, social media and it’s agenda for us to seek outer validation while destroying relational communication?

The bible says that we ought to keep our eyes fixed on the author and finisher of our faith. God started you in the faith, and He is able to keep you, but you have to have your eyes on Him. The bible also says the path of men seems to be going well, but it ends in death- maybe we should take some time to see which path we are on. If your perception, if folly, then you will not be able to receive God’s precepts.

Precept:

  • a general rule intended to regulate or guide behavior or thought; principle, command, rule, decree, will, commandment.

Are we living life the same as the world does? Are we staying mad at someone, instead of offering forgiveness as God offers us? Are you seeking revenge, or are you letting God have His way? Are we sharing our bodies with people, instead of fleeing from fornication since we are the temple of God’s holy spirit? Are we celebrating holidays as society does just to go with the flow, or are we looking to honor God each day as His word tells us to bring light into the world’s ignorance?

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus, I come before you to ask for your love to renew and refocus us all who desire and recognize that in anyway we have looked away from you. We do not want to be like Peter who began to sink, when he looked at the waves instead of looking at the One who called him to walk on the waters. I pray for your strength and renewal for those who are tired, weary or who are going through apathy in their lives. I pray they would realize that they are looking at the wrongs things in their life. I pray for revelation for those reading as well. In Jesus name, Amen.
