Devotional 1/5

The next morning Jesus was walking with his followers. They saw the fig tree that he spoke to the day before. The tree was dry and dead, even the roots. Peter remembered the tree and said to Jesus, “Teacher, look! Yesterday, you told that fig tree to die. Now it is dry and dead!”

Jesus answered, “Have faith in God. The truth is, you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, mountain, fall into the sea.’ And if you have no doubts in your mind and believe that what you say will happen, then God will do it for you. So I tell you to ask for what you want in prayer. And if you believe that you have received those things, then they will be yours. Mark 11:20-24

Anyone can count the seeds in an apple, but only God can count the apples in a seed.

The context of this verse pertains to God’s power, through His son Jesus. When we read this verse, we often read it in that context. Today I want to talk about bearing fruit.

Bear fruit

  • Yield positive results
  • Meet with success
  • Be successful
  • Be effective
  • Be profitable
  • Go as planned

If we plant a seed, we expect a harvest… right? In the scripture, the bible says that Jesus went to the fig tree, looking for figs. Figs are fruits, which are good for food. But when He went to it, expecting to find fruit He cursed it and it died. Sounds pretty cruel, from a good God; I know. But God cannot be mocked, He is just and He is holy. God is not half holy, or on His way to holiness, He IS holy.

And what struck me about this scripture, is not that God cursed the fig tree and demonstrated His all powerful, life giving or life taking authority: but that He was looking for figs. Jesus was actually looking for fruit on the tree. It made me think about my own life, and even your life. God knows you have a lot to give, and He is expecting some fruit from your life.

When God gave you His love, He gave you a seed of love. This seed is to succeed in loving others, not only your-self. When He God placed a gift inside you, it is so you would edify others.  When He gave you a talent, it is so that you would effectively share it with others. Let’s say God gave you a job, whatever it is, you should be profitable to that company. If God blessed you with children, He is going to come by and expect that you are raising them for His honor and glory.

We will all give account to God for all He has seeded in us. It may seem that you have nothing, or that you have gone through hell and back and it has been for nothing…but there’s a work God has been doing. Remember, the seed is planted in the dirt. It breaks, it pushes against the soil to grow but eventually it grows deep down and also sprouts up and out.

May our lives be of those seeds who do as it is expected of them.

Let’s pray:

Father God, our Lord and our Savior. Thank you for Holy spirit, and the seed you have implanted in us, first and foremost the fruit of your spirit. As the scripture says, the fruit of your spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, meekness, self control and faith. May we all bear YOUR fruit in our character. May we also as your word says harvest perseverance and firmness in our character through every test we go through, and may we harvest a reward from the seed of self-control in our lives. I also pray for those who may not know you, may the conviction of Your Holy Spirit plant a seed of repentance in their hearts, and therefore live out the journey it is to walk with you forever. May none of us be cursed because you came to us, and we did not have any fruit from our seeds. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
