Remember Lot’s wife. Luke 17:26

Backsliding, generally first begins with neglect of private prayer.

J.C Ryle

In the bible, we learn of Sodom and Gomorrah a land of people who practiced sodomy as well as committed many faults against God. This place was destroyed by God’s wrath, because they refused to give their attention to God, and loved their sins much more than God’s light. Lot, Abraham’s cousin was forewarned by angels of what would happen. They even came into his house, and dined in their home. It would be obvious that Lot’s wife, and children were present when they were instructed to run for their lives! God told them escape for your lives, and do NOT look back!!!! When the bible says, Remember Lot’s wife; I will have you know… that we know her for one single act. She looked back and instantly became a pile of dust (the bible says ‘a pillar of salt’).

I had never heard of the term  back slide, until I became a Christian. During prayer services, many would ask for prayer for backsliders. These are people, who at one point claimed to be Christians but decided to turn back to their old ways (usually the world’s ways). God speaks judgement over Israel, because in the context of of scripture, Israel would constantly backslide into their own ways, and apart from God’s ways. God’s ways were known to them, but they return to their self centered ways.

Let me clarify: Adam and Eve sinned, they did not have anywhere to backslide to. In the beginning, Adam and Eve sinned, they trespassed God’s divine command. They knew God, but did not have anything to backslide to. Lot’s wife also knew God, and sinned by disobedience, but also backslid by looking back at what ‘once was familiar’.

  • relapse, return to bad ways or error;
  • lapseregressweaken, lose one’s resolve;
  • give in to temptation, go astray, leave the straight and narrow, fall off the wagon;

  • failing to do what is known to be right.
  • an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.
  • miss the mark

Throughout the bible, the Lord speaks to the people of Israel in a manner where He speaks to a people who KNOW Him. It is one thing to know God, and know of God. These people knew God, and listened for a while, but different reasons turn away from God into old ways. It can happen to any of us, we listen, and begin to follow Jesus, but we can get sidetracked, seduced, or even trapped by our own desires, out of God’s path. Backsliders have hope, because they can always repent; but what seems like a momentary lack of focus, can become departure from the faith forever.

Backsliders revert to their old ways, instead of going forward with God. God is above all, He is holy and He is just he called us out of darkness, DON’T LOOK BACK Y’ALL.

Let’s pray:

Lord God, I thank you for salvation and for Jesus sacrifice, and for the infilling of your holy spirit. Thank you for bringing me into this whole new world, even though it’s not as I would prefer it to be. You commanded Lot and his family to not look back. But maybe, his wife had things which concerned her and she made the wrong choice to do so. Maybe she had loved ones, maybe she felt afraid of starting a new life away from the land, maybe she was just straight up disobedient, and did not think that by disobeying God’s command this time she would perish. Please let us obey You, Lord, and resist the temptations to turn back. May we not look back at the past in curiosity, or with melancholy, because the future only gets better given we are with you. I pray you break the chains of regrets, and the illusions the enemy may paint for us when we are weak. May we be saved until the end. In the matchless name of Jesus, Amen.
