Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
God has equipped you to handle difficult things. In fact, He has already planted the seeds of discipline and self-control inside you. You just have to water those seeds with His Word to make them grow!
Self control is like going against yourself. In a way it’s as if we have to mother ourselves in every area, especially where we need to overcome! Things like our feelings, our thoughts, our moods, and urges can be detrimental, if we allow ourselves to let them lead. Let’s say I have an urge to have sex. Does that mean I should grab an attractive guy to fulfill my desire? I can, but is this God’s way?
The flesh and the soul are like a company with good and bad employees. Some employees work really hard, some are being trained, some get away with doing just enough, and some are sloppy or lazy. This is how we are: we are the company, while our minds, our feelings and our flesh are the employees. Some thoughts and feelings are good, even helpful but there are also others which work against us. For instance, some thoughts are crazy or rampant; emotions may be aggressive or wild; and our bodies unruly or fierce. Think about it… have you ever been full, yet in your greed force feed yourself the delicious left overs? Or have you ever thought, I will kill her, or man I just know I just had a 2 week vacation, but I’m going to call out I feel like I could use more day… We can be sabotaged by our own flesh and souls, so I am here to remind us all that we need internal discipline, to be stronger than these. The soul is the part of our being where our minds, emotions and wills sit. The flesh constitutes of the senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste (the animalistic part of man).
If we live our lives being led by these companies, we go unchecked, these entities will become stronger than our Spirit where we begin to live unrestrained and unapproved lives. How do you think people become alcoholics, drug abusers, rapists, etc? They refused to check themselves. They missed the life class which spoke about our need for self control. We don’t learn about self control growing up, but we instinctively learn to please ourselves and chase what makes us feel good in the moment.
Everything requires self discipline: EVERYTHING! From earning and managing money, to maintaining a job, attending school, congregating in church, even to having relationships. We do not always go to work because it is our favorite place to be! We go to work because it pays us. We go to school to acquire knowledge and skills, for a career. We go to church to receive God’s word and strength. We don’t save money because we feel like it, we do it because we have to.
Breaking the commitment with God, is like an adulterous marriage: cheating on your spouse with someone else. If we stop the affair sooner than later, the consequences are less but if we grow into a lifestyle of sin- the enemy gains more and more power over us. Continuing in sin causes the body to awaken to its senses and it’s pleasures, while the spirit is weak. We all sin, but it is up to us to be strong and to walk away from sin. Nobody can be strong for us. Whenever we have an issue or problem, illicit desires & urges, bad moods, we are to fall before God to pray. Yet many of us, do what we know to do: smoke, drink, sex, party, workout, or whatever our thing is. We all have struggles, and specifically in regards to our relationship with God. . It is up to us to rebuild our relationship with God, it is up to us alone. After falling in to sin and drifting away from God it is pretty hard to rebuild the relationship.
How do we avoid getting weak? By spending time with God, have one on one time with Him.
Father God, I love you and I am grateful to have you in my life. I come before to ask for self-discipline. Many people I know feels weak and their minds are disturbed. Holy Spirit, I ask you to make yourself present in our lives. Lord, I ask that your power of your strength and love to guide and direct us. Help us to have more self-control, train us Jesus by a quickening of your Spirit. May we be hopeful and joyful during the training, help us to choose to walk away from temptations and distractions. May we be freed from past hurts and misunderstanding so that nothing can weigh us down. As Kim Walker sings, Walk with me’, walk with us Jesus and continue to mold us into who You want us to be. Show us how to conquer our promised lands, guard our testimonies and have your goodness and mercy follow us every day of our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
