Devotional 3/19

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death. James 1:13-15

We have all experienced temptation. We face emotional, material and physical temptations on a daily basis. Temptation can be just about anything: the temptation to give up on something, giving in to physical pleasure, and even to get something which is prohibited to us. Humans are peculiar beings, the first word we usually see children learn- is the word ‘NO’. This is because children are impulsive, playing and unreserved, while adults are very much bossy and caring. Constantly watching over and guarding children from harm adults tend to correct them with the word ‘no’. And these little rascals, think to challenge us as way to play.

I often find that when there are restrictions placed on an activity or something, I have a curiousity for it. Except that there is wisdom behind the phrase, “curiosity killed the cat”. Giving in to temptations can destroy our lives if left uncontrolled. Temptation, as the bible says is an enticement.

Enticement is bait, and when it is birthed it causes death. The Lord has set His order in His word, as to how He desires for us to live. He is the parent who sets boundaries, like ‘no sweets after dinner’, He knows that we will not sleep at the appropriate time if we have sugar before bed time. He sets boundaries in His word, for our own good. For example, sex is reserved for married couples. The reason God set this order is because two become one after sex. Therefore if we unite with someone before marriage, we are defying God’s order, His word and His will. He gave us the desire for sex, but He also provides the partner (He did so for Adam; we should not doubt He will do so for us.).  Image result for Corinthians 10:12-13

We all have power over ourselves, some have simply not cultivated their own power. We all love to eat food, but we have the ability to not let food control us- otherwise we would be obese and extremely selfish disregarding the needs of others. God gave us a spirit of self control, so that we may be able to resist and escape temptations. Temptation begins in the thought life- then thoughts become actions- it is only a matter of time. In our fantasies we think we can enjoy things, without being guilty of sin. Which is not true, we sin even with our minds.

I have been guilty for years, of finding myself battling a secret place of fantasy- and I know the power it has over me. This is what sin does, it enslaves us. Our minds are held captive by the fantasy, and birth desire! And we are trapped, because our thoughts think things which we do not even control sometimes, but we are able to overcome them thought by thought. There is a battle for our minds, our peace and sanity and it is why we need to counterattack consistently. The Word of God is the weapon of choice, which God provided- it is powerful, and active- it reaches the depths of our hearts, the pasts of our lives and even guards our futures. God bean a good work in us, and therefore He begins the process of sin detoxification, but we must give Him the access like a gardener to uproot, cut down, and plant.

The Lord Jesus was tempted, the bible says, so He was familiar to our weaknesses. So God does not give us more of a fight than we can bear.

Let’s pray:

Lord God, we thank you for your power to overcome and your upbringing. The battles we face against temptations are so strong sometimes, that we even struggle to fight it. Give us strength, Lord, to walk away from the desires that try to lure us in. Holy Spirit cleanse our minds, bodies and souls of all that is not pleasing to you. We know that we may have to struggle, fall, slip and even run from these battles- but strengthen us as only you can. I pray that you change our desires, and give us deeper convictions to follow your righteousness and to walk in holiness. This may not be done overnight, but we come to you Lord because you can do all things and we can do all things through you. In Jesus name, Amen.
