Devotional 6/8

The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him. Genesis 2:8,18

Eve was not created above or below Adam; she was complementary: a match.

If we study the word of God, we are able to see that God is a matchmaker. When we become property of God, belonging to Jesus who paid a price for us, we should no longer look to make important decisions like being in relationships with others according to how things look, how we feel or in ways we can rationalize.

The book of Genesis says that God planted a garden in Eden, and He placed Adam in the garden. God put Adam in a place and in position. Adam was alone for some time before God brought Eve to him: Adam was given work to do. The Lord gave Adam rules and responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and keep the land
  • Name and have authority over the animals
  • Stay away from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

In order for God to tell Adam these things, the first thing we must recognize is that Adam and God had a relationship.

By nature, we are social creatures: we need companionship. Statistics say that lonely people die quicker than those who live with pets. Imagine the powers of being lonely to being accompanied: God knows loneliness is not good. God noticed that Adam was alone: It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him (Genesis 2).

Adam had a relationship with God, and was somewhat fulfilled in life by being busy, obedient and in position by God but he was still alone. And God then, created a suitable helper for him, by creating Eve.

  1. What is a helper?
  • One who balances another
  • One who complements another

To complement something means a thing that completes, or brings to full capacity: a supplement which supports or enhances something else when added to it. Eve was a complement to Adam.

Eve would be an enhancement to Adam’s life, she would help Adam tend to the garden, to the animals, and to get food. Eventually God commanded them to produce children (society). Eve was God’s solution to Adam’s lack: in the same way that the Holy Spirit is God’s solution to our needs (loneliness, brokenness, shortcomings, etc).

In Hebrew the word “helper” is “ezer” (Eben-ezer: with God’s help the Israelites obtained the victory over the Philistines at Mizpah (1 Samuel 7:12). Also in Psalm 115, the Bible reminds us that God is our Helper. And one of Holy Spirit’s names is HELPER.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. John 14:26

Females, are you a helper? Males, are you working in your call and position?

Let’s pray:

Lord God, heavenly match maker, you’ve called the Eve’s to be helpers. I pray that you would help us get rid of our selfish attitudes as women in marriage, waiting for marriage or in relationships now. I pray your Holy Spirit would help us to be creative in any way that the relationships calls for. I pray for joy as we see the fruit of our labor, and that we may rejoice even in the most minimal things. May you restore the relationships where abuse, neglect or betrayal has hindered unity and support. I pray you give us discernment, wisdom and love towards those you have placed in our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
