Devotional 6/16

God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. Thessalonians 4:7-8

Purity is looking to God’s standards and not the world’s.

God has called us to a righteous life and to live as such, we have to walk in purity. This involves not contaminating ourselves by engaging in sexual activities and things of the world that do not please God. As believers in Christ, we should abstain from any sexual activities prohibited by God, including sex before marriage and self pleasing practices like masturbation or pornography. These bring our flesh pleasure, but they also open doors for the enemy to bind us.

The Bible says that every sin is outside of the body, but that sexual sins are against the body! If we choose to live an impure life, it is to reject God, and therefore the Spirit grieves. The consequences of sexually immoral practices are immediate because they are targeted against the mind of the spirit from the mind of the flesh. All sin will drifts us away from God through shame, guilt and wayward thoughts, but sexual sins guarantee these consequences in an exponential way.

These sins satisfy us, but they also awaken the flesh. Jesus commands us to deny ourselves, and bringing gratification to the flesh decreases our spiritual focus and spiritual stamina. Not only is the feeling of gratification temporary but will also leave us wanting more, making the flesh a stronger beast. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, so even in the midst of sin let’s remember to humble ourselves before The Lord in prayer.

The desires we have are normal, but they are not invincible. We are able to overcome by confessing our sins, and by cultivating the fruit of the Spirit: self discipline. By choosing purity, we will be able to stand against the enemy (in this case, our flesh) or like Joseph we will be able to run!! As the scriptures says, we humble ourselves before God, and resist the enemy. The Lord will carry out the work He began in us, and He died for us, once and for all: God’s desire is that we live blameless lives where the accuser cannot point a finger at us.

God will always provide a way out and we need to choose the way out rather than indulge in our fleshly desires. This doesn’t mean that we won’t mess up or no longer be tempted, but that we build spiritual muscles when we stand firm against temptations! The key is to fight, and resistance is a form of fighting as well as pledging allegiance to God. Always take the way out when it is provided. Jesus is coming for a church who’s washed by Your Word, whose clothing is as white as snow, without blemish and wrinkle.

Our purity is sacred to God. It shouldn’t be negotiated. Let’s treasure and defend it.

Let’s pray:

Lord God, May we be washed by your word, and may those who have indulged in sexual immorality be washed clean by your blood. Help us to realign our lives according to your purpose and calling, may we consider it possible to live in purity of heart and also purity in our sexual life. I ask for your mercy, and for wisdom and strategy to overcome any temptation that comes against us including sexual sins. May you also prepare us to be husbands and wives, so that as your word says we may marry and not burn. I ask you for these favors in Jesus name, Amen.
