Devotional 7/26

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 7:1

There are two types of the fear of God:
Fear that God will hurt me,
and Fear that I will hurt God by my actions.

Which one do you possess?

Simply stated the fear of God, is to be afraid to offend or disrespect God. If the truth be told, we offend God constantly, whether we intend to or not. And we also offend the people we love without meaning to, and the reason we do so is because we are imperfect people. We live in a broken world, with a fallen state of deprivation. Our hearts are filled with vanity and selfish agendas, and we vaguely know what love is.

I remember witnessing an argument between a friend of mine and her boyfriend who now worked in her same store. I observed that they meant well, but were undoubtedly disrespecting each other. They had recently began working in the same location, and it was becoming obvious they could not separate personal issues from their duty as coworkers. I was in the room while they argued on the phone, and Holy Spirit gave me a strategy for her: show him the same respect you show your pastor or district manager.

This idea didn’t come from me, it came from God. And recently it has been interesting to me that we show people respect, honor and even love but sometimes God as a person goes over our heads. Has God become your next door neighbor, who you acknowledge when you see him some mornings, or when you need some sugar?

It seems as if lately God has become familiar to us, and we are very cautious around others. Let’s face it: when you are with your friends and family you act in a way that wouldn’t necessarily act with your program director or investor. We know how to be fun and silly with our siblings, but we cannot act this way with our pastor or teacher.

Lets be cautious in our relationship with God. Let’s be more afraid of disappointing God, than people. This way we can honor His Presence.

Let’s s pray:

Lord God, I thank you for being the all knowing God, the great architect, the sustainer of our souls. Today I pray for all of us who have made you a mere friend, or a God for in the heavens with no personality or emotions. We ask you for forgiveness. And ask you to sanctify our hearts as we choose to walk with you on a daily basis. I pray for the boldness and courage to stand strong in the face of opportunities which may offend you, and a sensitivity to perceive your presence with us. I thank you in advance for touching our hearts. I’m Jesus name, Amen.
