… but the worries and cares of the world [the distractions of this age with its worldly pleasures], and the deceitfulness [and the false security or glamour] of wealth [or fame], and the passionate desires for all the other things creep in and choke out the word, and it becomes unfruitful. Mark 4:19
I declare that no devil, no witchcraft, no relationship, and none of our emotions, will be able to stop what God is about to do in our lives!
Have you ever been distracted from your purpose and calling? I know I have. I know it sounds cliché to say the devil will send you a trap right before your greatest breakthrough, but I have walked far enough in God to know that it is true.
Distractions don’t look like anything in specific, anything can become a little g ‘god’ to us. The things that take our attention from God and from our labor in the Lord (and/or in this life) is a distraction, and is not of God. Sometimes we do not know whether we are being tempted of the devil, or tested by God; but I have concluded that each trial is one in the same.
For example, when we allow our feelings to consume and control us, they too can become a distraction. God will test us using our own emotions:
- Will you continue to serve even when you are heartbroken?
- Will you continue to love people who hate you?
- Will you forgive those who you should be resenting?
But Satan will tempt us to fail God, in those very tests:
- Your heart is broken, why don’t you just leave the church?
- They don’t like you, give them a piece of your mind!
- What they did is unforgiveable.
When dealing with any distraction we need to ask ourselves, am I bowing down to God and His Word or to my current circumstances? When practicing for my road test, my instructor reminds me that ‘one distraction can steal my reaction’. This is true for matters of vision, and spiritual stamina.
Life has a lot going on, and the enemy can use almost anything to take our energy and attention to make our devotion to God ineffective. I only graced the surface on emotions, but there are many things which pose a threat to our spiritual vitality. Things from responsibilities, to desires, relationships, our past and even guilt or shame.
So if you do lose your focus, don’t be discouraged and let it keep you down! Go to the Lord, and ask Him to refocus your vision and thought life. Then get back to work and keep going. God will enable you to pick up the pace by infilling you with His grace! Make sure to take it one day at a time, you and God can keep moving forward, together!
Father God, most holy and perfect God. Our times are in your hands, I ask you to help us realign and refocus our eyesight to your will and purpose. May our desires match yours, and our feet follow your light which shines in darkness. May you guard our lips from speaking vain things and curses. In Jesus name, Amen.
