Devotional 9/4

… a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away… Ecclesiastes 3:6

Bad habits are like a comfortable bed, easy to get into, but hard to get out of.

We can have relationships with things that can become toxic. Things like liquor, shopping, or even food; we may feel good when we do/use them but once they become a habit… it becomes a pattern which needs to end. There’s a song I heard on K-Love, a few days ago by Francesca Batistelli called The Breakup Song. In the song, she breaks up with Fear and tells fear that she’s had enough:

Fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you telling me what I’m not
Like you know me, well guess what
I know who I am
I know I’m strong and I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here

I have a bad habit of thinking that life is not fair. And this is true, the thing is that God is just. So regardless of how we may treated or shortchanged by life- God has a good and generous way of making it up to us.

The Lord wants us to be courageous when it comes to standing up for Him. He says that we ought to guard our hearts and guard our faith. If we are to be in relationships it should be with those who love the Lord as we do. If we are to walk together, we are to do so in agreement: can two walk together except they walk in agreement? (Amos). In a way, we think of tangible things like money or vices, but we also have negative relationships with ourselves and other with spiritual things like anger, envy, hate, fear, etc. So like Francesca, we too need to give up these hindrances.

Love looks like something, it looks like peace, generosity and respect. May we be on guard towards anything that may stand in our way towards reaching God’s purpose and eternal salvation. May we be courageous to do God’s will. Strong to do what we need to do when letting go of what no longer suits us, and may we do all things in love.

Let’s pray:

Father God, thank you Jesus. Thank you for your Holy Spirit. I pray for all those who need to express their love to others. I pray you give us generous hearts, full of affection and mercy towards others. Show us how to be generous people, freely giving to others as we have received. May we not judge others, and love them who without regard to what they deserve or do not deserve. I pray for the grace to be kind and respectful to others. In Jesus name, Amen. See the source image
