Devotional 9/5

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

Sometimes God doesn’t change your situation,
because He is trying to change your heart.

Remember the Israelites our in the wilderness? God took them through the wilderness to show them what was in their hearts. Oftentimes we believe that because we are saved we have been wholly delivered and sanctified, except that this is only partially true. The Spirit of God brings immediate changes to our spiritual condition, but our souls and body have yet to be renewed.

Many of us come to Christ with broken, wounded or hardened hearts. We can be broken in places, that are separate from the work God did in our Spirit. When God says He look at the heart of man, He is talking about our emotions, our affections and desires: our inner being. We tend to fall in love, in true love with peoples hearts- not their looks, their financial status, their IQ, not their affections. We fall in love with the heart of a person, their soul.

In church we have to be careful to blame demons for our current issues. We cannot assume it is a spirit of infirmity when those sick people don’t sleep, eat all of the wrong foods and do not respect the laws of nature by dressing appropriately in cold or rainy weather.

Our soul is the seat of our mind, will and emotions. If our will is damaged, we will be rebellious, obstinate, indecisive, etc. If our mind is traumatized, paradigms will keep us bound to wrong beliefs. And if our hearts are contaminated, we are sick. We can be saved and be sick.

God blesses us because of our hearts, not because of what we have earned. Some blessings are plainly His extended mercy, and others the recompense of obedience-but frankly sometimes His goodness and favor makes no sense: He is looking at the intentions of your heart.

Let’s pray:

Father God, thank you for allowing us to change. You have given us resources and most importantly your Spirit to develop ourselves and manifest our full potential. I thank you, and ask you to search our hearts and purify us if you have to, in Jesus name, Amen.
