Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the wind; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.'” Ezekiel 37:9

Anything dead coming back to life, hurts.
Toni Morrison

The Lord told Ezekiel, ‘prophesy to the Spirit’. Prophesying is to speak while being divinely inspired. Prophesy either tells the future (foretelling) or it brings something out (warning, exhortation, correction, encouragement, strengthening, comfort, etc.) by using the Word of God (forth-telling). In this instance, the Lord demonstrated what would occur in the future for the people of Israel- they had been defeated in battle and died, but God would bring them back to life and they would be a mighty army once again.

The Lord commanded Ezekiel to prophesy to the Spirit, which is to be read: SPEAK TO THE SPIRIT. In the Hebrew, the word for wind, Spirit and breath is RUACH. Ezequiel was commanded to speak to the power of God, aka Holy Spirit, and He was to bring the dead back to life. God is the only one who can quicken our being, by HIS Power. Holy Spirit can change us in the blink of an eye!See the source image

  • God’s ruach was hovering over the surface of the water.  (Gen. 1:2)
  • They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath (ruach) of life. (Gen. 7: 15)
  • and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit (ruach) shall return unto God who gave it (Eccles. 12: 7).

Have you forgotten what it’s like to be happy, have you lost your joy? Have you lost your hope in God?  Have you grown tired of life and its rollercoaster rides? Are you numb to disappointment and chaos? Has your self discipline gone out the window? Have you lost your love for people, for ministry, for yourself? Have you lost discernment? How’s your prayer life? How’s your body? How’s your mental health? Holy Spirit, has the power to quicken ANY and ALL deadness in your life: any situation or trauma, whether past or present: any emotion, any memory, illness, mental health issue, disease, any brokenness!

Nothing and no one can restore human bones to life, which is why God uses this extensive metaphor to illustrate to us that He is the ultimate power! Imagine: the bones attached to the respective bones, the muscles, fibers, ligaments, tendons and all of the body systems had to come together… and then skin had to cover them… and then finally God had to breathe life over them. What a mighty God we serve.

The Lord has the power to catapult us into a different state of being, in a fraction of a second- if He desires it so. Only God has the power to cause the deadest things in our lives, to come back to life.

This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain and defeated places in my life, that I may live.

Let’s pray:

Lord God, you are the Most High God, the creator of the heavens and the earth, of all that can be seen and even the invisible things. You are ALL powerful, you know ALL things, You are ever present, and You are able! You are the Sovereign God. The Author of our lives, and of our faith and today right now, I speak to the Spirit, as you said; The Sovereign Lord, says to come ruach, from the four winds and breathe into the dead and defeated places of our lives. Bring us back to life by your Spirit. Resurrect us Spirit of the Living God. In Jesus name, Amen.
