Devotional 1/13

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Philippians‬ ‭4:8

Your mind will always believe everything you tell it. Feed it hope. Feed it Truth. Feed it with love.

Positivity does not mean we live in denial of the realities around us, it simply means we choose to focus our energy on the good things. Instead of feeding ourselves with thoughts or words of fear and doubt, let’s speak and think thoughts filled with faith and awe! Instead of dwelling on our mistakes, we can use our energy to think on our goals and accomplishments! Instead of looking for the bad things, let’s notice the amusing, the honorable and the kind gestures we come across on a daily basis.

As a young girl, I learned that plants are living things and that they are affected by the things which are spoken to them. I saw an experiment with 2 plants in separate pots: one was spoken to positively and the other negatively. They were in the same window sill, receiving the same amount of water and sunlight. The plant which received the negative talk only sprouted: it was brown and brittle. While the other plant was a radiant green with about 3 stems, and many leaves! We are more complex and valuable than plants, but we, too, are affected by negative and positive self talk and thoughts. It’s easy to dwell on the negative, but when we are our body language reflects it! Have you noticed? We become tense, roll our eyes, suck our teeth, become fidgety, lower our shoulders or our heads and mope around. But when we are positive, we are more relaxed, enthusiastic, energetic, our eyes glisten, and we smile more often. We are like the plants in the experiment above, we feed on our thoughts and spoken words and give birth to life, body language, and attitudes!

Our lives need to be fed with love, faith, and hope! If we are well fed we will grow strong and healthy, but if we eat junk, we will become weak and sick. So how are you feeding yourself?

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus, you told us in your word to focus on the good things in life. You know our human nature and how we are prone to negativity, criticism and worry: but you also know that we can choose a different route for a different outcome. I ask you today to help us destroy the negative patterns of thinking and speaking which may seem normal to us. I pray you join us to shift any negative aspect of our attitudes into a positive ones! In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
