Devotional 3/4

The grace of God trains us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age; Titus 2:12

Don’t let your happiness depend on something you can lose.

C.S Lewis

Self control may be a foreign subject to many. For instance, in order to be fed, receive love and affection, and get their diapers changed- children will cry, fuss and fight. We are programmed to continue in this pattern, and when we are prohibited a thing, we consider it an evil thing. God is not withholding any good thing from us: He is developing SELF CONTROL.

In the book of Corinthians, Paul ties both food and sexual desire as being created for God, yet for the body… but both would come to an end. You see in heaven we won’t have sexual urges, or intimate relationships- these are things we enjoy only on earth (this is the same with mental health, emotional wholeness, physical health, purity and finances). These things are not bad to desire, they are human desires and good for the body. For instance, if you have a sweet tooth, and they are your weakness- you don’t need deliverance: you need self control. In order to avoid obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis and all sorts of things: God has given us self control. God will deliver us from evil, but He will not deliver us from our own desires (pleasures) or temptation!

Desire becomes an issue, when self control is not present! Most times it’s not a devil, it’s lack of self control and other times it’s a heart condition. The Bible says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Temptations come from our own desires. There is no such thing as deliverance from temptation. If you desire to have a partner, and have sexual urges- believe me God will not remove your sexual urges! But He will give you enough wisdom to seek purity, and not lay up with just anyone. But if you’ve made having a relationship, a career, a feeling, a sensation, or any thing your go to place, your escape or in other words that thing that will finally make you happy: it has become your treasure.

God has capacitated you with all you need to live a godly life (2 Peter 1:3). He knows that you are able to withstand the trials and the temptations, and just when you cannot bear- He will provide the escape. The Lord will not change our human desires- He will teach us to develop self control and manage them.

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus, you are awesome and a loving father. Thank you for creating each of us so uniquely. Thank you for the diversity you’ve placed in each of us, and giving us all we need to live godly lives. I lift up my brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray for contentment, and self control for each of us. May you show each of your children their deep rooted issues and train them to use self control and manage their desires. And if any need deliverance, I pray for you to do so. In Jesus name, Amen.
