Devotional 3/26

Do not be hasty to speak, and do not let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God. After all, God is in heaven and you are on earth. So let your words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:2

Be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it!

A genuine prayer life is tricky.

Tricky:
  • (of a task, problem, or situation) requiring care and skill because difficult or awkward.

One time I asked God to solidify a friendship between myself and another female, and within a few days the relationship was over and done with! In another instance, I prayed for God to show me a certain coworker’s heart- and the next day she gave me such an attitude, it was so ugly and insulting! And yet in another occasion, I told God that I needed to set boundaries at work; and wouldn’t you know it- the next day, one of them bought lunch for another and I was excluded. Won’t He do it?!

The Lord has only one request: when you come to Me, acknowledge that I am God- recognize that I am He who hears your prayers, and will answer. Where’s the sense in telling God what you think He wants to hear? God knows words spoken from the heart, and vain words spoken just to speak! We should avoid coming to God saying meaningless things. I remember a time, when I was not praying as I should have- but I spoke to God all the day long. The Holy Spirit of the Lord clearly told me:

you’re talking a lot but you are not saying anything.

It made me take a moment to think before speaking to God. God is our lover, our best friend and our healer- but He is also the Most High God. He answers prayers! We can speak to God all day long, express our fears and anxieties and even talk about random events. He only asks that we watch our thoughts and our words in prayer, in worship and daily dialogue: it is better to be silent than to mindlessly offer sacrifice.

God is not man that He should lie, He promises and He fulfills. He knows the end from the beginning, and His desire is that we step into His predestined will. Tell God what you mean, not the reckless babble you say to anybody who’d listen. Consider your prayers today, because He will respond!

Lets pray:

Father God, we repent for making reckless promises and requests to you. May you clean our slate and help us to continue seeking you with genuine prayers and petitions. We cast our cares upon you Lord. We lay our anxieties, fears and desires at you feet. Help us to pray according to your word, and open our hearts to hear your voice. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
