The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 1 Samuel 16:1
God knows your heart more than you do. God wants you to know that, at the end of the day, your heart is in his hands.
It’s funny how God can tell us, “I am taking this person (or that thing) away” yet for whatever reason… we hold on to it for dear life. It could be unbelief, it could be failed expectations, it could be grief: but mourning keeps us stuck. God has a next, and it’s much better than what He has taken away.
The Lord God gave Saul the chance to prove himself, but God rejected him. It could’ve worked, but it didn’t! God gave him the opportunity to rule over Israel, can’t say He didn’t. He could’ve… should’ve… would’ve been approved by God.. but He didn’t pass God’s fire tests. The prophet Samuel anointed Saul to be king, under the direction of God and as any would suppose, this Saul would glorify God as the faithful and prosperous king of Israel … but he wasn’t. And so, God moved on. Saul was still king, but the Lord rejected him and it hurt Samuel so much that God had to visit him. The Lord disapproved of Saul, and the prophet Samuel was stuck in mourning. The Lord had to ask him: are you still mourning over one I have rejected? God is funny, sometimes He feels the need to ask us questions, (I believe) it’s so He could bring us up to date. For instance he asked others in the bible, where are you? (Adam and Eve), what are you doing here (Elijah), why do you persecute me? (Paul), where were you when I made the stars and they sky, the oceans and its boundaries? (Job) and a few others. The prophet Samuel was sad, and grieving over his failed expectations, but the Lord came to help him get unstuck. For starters, the Lord gave him directions and instructions:
- Fill your horn with oil
- Go to Jesse’s house in Bethlehem
- I have chosen the next king
Are you still mourning the loss, the disappointment, the change, the curve ball? The Lord reminds you today
- Let go fill yourself up with courage and power (anointing)
- I have something better in store (I will give you direction)
- I’m in control (I know the future)
Father God, thank you for removing the blindfolds from our eyes. Thank you for coming to us, just like you came to the prophet Samuel. Thank you for deliverance Jesus. Great is your faithfulness. In Jesus name, Amen.
