Shield & Buckler

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Psalm 91:4

God will either shield you from suffering or give you unfailing strength to bear it.

St. Francis de Sales

Disappointments have a way of stealing our hope and breaking down our faith. It wears us down and renews our mind to expect only negative things. Fear is a very real thing especially after many failures and setbacks. But our God and His word are our shield and buckler.

Shield:

  • A hook, a, shield, cold
  • a person or thing providing protection, defense

Buckler:

  • something surrounding the person
  • a broad piece of metal or another suitable material, held by straps or a handle attached on one side, used as a protection against blows or missiles
  • Something surrounding the person, a shield

We don’t have to be afraid or discouraged by Satan’s devices because the Lord God Almighty is our protector. Scriptures say that we are the apple of God’s eyes, meaning He cares for us in the same way we protect our eyes from intrusion.

Hebrews 11:6, says that without faith it is impossible to please God: we must believe He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. The truth, which is the word of God, is also our defense from the devices of the Satan. And when we know the scriptures, we can defend ourselves against his attacks. Knowing the scriptures is important but it’s more important to believe what we know about God and His word.

The Lord is sovereign, He is all knowing and in control of all things. God is already 10 steps ahead of whatever Satan may be plotting. Even if the righteous fall, Proverbs 24:16 says that we will rise again. Remember, the enemy comes one way but flees in 7 different ways.

Let’s pray:

Thank you father God for your strength and faithfulness. I pray for all your people to walk in conviction of who you say you are in your word and the promises available to us. In Jesus name Amen.
