So Abram said to Lot, “There should be no arguing between you and me or between your people and my people. We are all brothers. We should separate. You can choose any place you want. If you go to the left, I will go to the right. If you go to the right, I will go to the left.” Genesis 13:8-9
If they cannot believe how you believe, how can you walk together?
The book of Genesis says that the Lord called Abraham to leave his family and father’s house. There are things that God wants to do in our lives and places He wants to take us. But when we are trapped by religion or familiarity, we can’t truly run with God where, when and how He desires.
Familiarity can keep us in the wrong relationships, because we fear being alone or starting new. Abraham kept him around because he was familiar. Abraham brought him along because they were relatives and because he also had a sense of responsibility for him. Religion is founded upon our ego (self-importance); it gives us a sense of duty. We like Abraham may be convinced that we are serving God, when we are actually serving man. In order to have Abraham’s full heart and attention, the Lord had to cause/allow dissension in their lives. It then seems Lot was not concerned about the promises or the covenant God had made and that Lot was with Abraham for the benefits (Gen. 13:10); could it be that Lot was simply looking out for himself, and not really care for Abraham after all?
The Lord will remove people from our lives because they limit the plans God has for us. People like Lot are leeches and manipulative: they need to be in control and to benefit from the relationship. People like Lot, know how to use but not acknowledge others. They desire to control and eventually weigh people down with contention, offense and disapproval. They are biased in their thinking and tend to ostracize those they cannot control. It is not in them to genuinely trust or be interested in the well being or success of others if there’s no benefit for them.
God knows the intentions, thoughts, and conversations people have when you are not around. If you trust God, He will show you why you to change environments or be separated from people. It’s not important for others to understand or agree, it’s always been between You and God… it was never between you and them anyway.
Lord God, thank you for orchestrating our lives and leading us through it. I pray for those people who are going through separations and change right now and need strength to move forward. I pray you empower them to make their own decisions and see how trustworthy you are. I plead the blood of Jesus against fear and doubt in Jesus name, give them peace Lord. May they walk in the conviction that you are in control of every detail of their lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
